Travelling Around Tunisia Without a Car: A Practical Guide

Trains, shared taxis and transfers: how to explore Tunis, Hammamet and Djerba without renting a car.

Is Tunisia possible without a rental car?

Yes, especially if you focus on Tunis, the northern suburbs or a coastal base. More remote sights need extra planning, so choose fewer stops and group nearby attractions.

Trains and intercity travel

Some cities are connected by rail. Check current routes, timetables and stations with SNCFT before booking. Allow time for onward travel from the station to your accommodation.

How shared taxis (louages) work

Louages are shared intercity taxis leaving from designated stations. Ask locally about the correct station, departure arrangements, fares and luggage; avoid tight connections.

A car-free city break in Tunis

Stay in central Tunis or the northern suburbs, then split your visit between the medina and Carthage/Sidi Bou Said. Check local transport and TGM operations before relying on them.

Hammamet without a car

A hotel near the old town makes walking easier. Yasmine Hammamet and more distant resorts may require taxis. Confirm your airport transfer and the cost of local journeys.

Djerba without driving

Djerba is spread out. Group Houmt Souk, Erriadh, Guellala and beach activities by area; organise taxis or transfers for longer journeys and evening returns.

A simple five-to-seven-day itinerary

Spend two or three nights in Tunis for the medina, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said. Add two or three nights in Hammamet if current transport options work for your dates. Consider Djerba as a separate trip rather than rushing it into the same week.

Before every journey

Check departure points, the last available service, fares and luggage rules. Keep offline maps, your accommodation address and a backup plan for late arrivals. Official rail information: https://www.sncft.com.tn/.
